Avis de décès de William-A. Hammill


William A. Hammill, died in Cambridge, MA, on Saturday, February 15, 2003, at age 86. Mr. Hammill was director of personnel at the United States Government Printing Office (GPO) until his retirement in 1976. At that time, the GPO was the largest printing and publications distribution organization in the world. Prior to coming to the GPO in 1963, he served as director of personnel at the United States Civil Service Commission and headed personnel programs at VA Medical Centers in Louisville, Battle Creek and Dearborn, MI, and New York, NY. Following retirement, he joined a management consulting firm and headed projects throughout the United States and the Virgin Islands. Mr. Hammill was active in community affairs since going to Washington, DC. He served three terms as a councilman in the Town of Cheverly, MD, and was a member of the Merit Board of the Maryland National Capital Park and Planning Commission for four years. He was one of the founders of the Prince George's Voluntary Action Center and served as a full-time executive director of that organization as a volunteer for three years. He was also a founder of the Prince George's Volunteer Coordinators Association. In 1984, he was selected as one of the twenty most outstanding volunteers in the Washington, DC, metropolitan area. In recognition of his volunteer efforts, Mr. Hammill was awarded a Private Sector Initiative Commendation by President Ronald Reagan at the White House in 1985. Born in Louisville, he graduated from the University of Louisville and did graduate studies in social work at New York University, the University of Louisville and Wayne State University. He was a veteran of World War II and the Korean Conflict and retired from the United States Air Force Reserve in 1968, as a lieutenant colonel. At the time of his death, he was a member the Ancient Order of Hibernians, the Federal Executive Institute Alumni Association, the Honorable Order of Kentucky Colonels and the Prince George's Voluntary Action Center and life member-emeritus of the Prince George's Hospital Center Board of Directors. He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Jane Krieger Hammill; two daughters, Marcia Bystryn (Jean-Claude) of New York City and Eleanor Hammill (David) of Cambridge; a sister, Adele Cowling of Mentor, OH; and four grandchildren, Annie and Alex Bystryn and Hannah and Ian Carlson. A funeral mass will be held at 10 a.m. on Monday, February 24, 2003, at St. Paul's Church in Cambridge. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be sent in his name to Southern Poverty Law Center, 400 Washington Ave., Montgomery, AL 36104.
