Col. Wallace Edward Reid, USAF, (Ret.) KENNEBUNK -- Col. Wallace Edward Reid, USAF, (Ret.), of Kennebunk, formerly of Kennebunkport, passed away on Dec. 24, 2012, at Huntington Common. He was born in New York City on Nov. 10, 1920, the son of Grace and Wilfred C. Reid Sr. He was an active citizen of his country and Kennebunkport. He owned the Arundel Inn from 1945 until 1972 and the Green Heron Inn (noted for the marvelous breakfast prepared by his wife, Virginia) until 1987. He served on the Southern Maine Regional Planning Board for several years. He was active in the Kennebunkport Historical Society. He served in the Army Air Corps during World War II as a cargo and transport pilot. After the war he remained in the Reserves. During his years as a reservist, he flew cargo and troops all over the world. He was activated during the Cuban Missile Crisis and flew cargo to Viet Nam during the Viet Nam War, retiring with the rank of Colonel in 1975. Prior to entering the active service, he earned a degree in Math Education and English from Montclair State Teachers' College in Montclair, N.J. After World War II, he attended the Massachusetts Institute of Technology on the GI Bill, earning a degree in Architecture. He and Virginia Alice Franklin were married in July 1944. For the next 68 years they were an incredible team. They had six children, ran two businesses, and traveled the United States and the world together and with friends. He will be remembered around Kennebunkport for several things. He was the marshal of the Memorial Day Parade for many years. He also was often seen checking the discarded mail for stamps to add to his extensive collection. He was predeceased by his parents; a daughter, Deidre Ann Nelson; and his elder brother, Wilfred Charles Reid Jr. Survivors include his wife of 68 years, Virginia; a daughter, Alice Reid Moisen, four sons, Robert Wallace Reid and his wife Janice, Jonathan Scott Reid and his wife Susan, Paul Shannon Reid and his wife Maritza, and Richard Alan Reid and his wife Kathleen; a brother, Charles Edward Reid of Kennebunkport; 13 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. Visiting hours will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. on Friday, Dec. 28, 2012, at the Bibber Memorial Chapel, 67 Summer St., Kennebunk. A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Dec. 29, 2012, at the South Congregational Church, Temple Street, Kennebunkport, with the Rev. Charles Whiston officiating. Interment will follow in Arundel Cemetery, Kennebunkport with full military honors. Arrangements are in care of Bibber Memorial Chapel, 67 Summer St., Kennebunk. www.bibberfuneral.com.
