CROPSEYVILLE Thomas A. Wheeler, 76, a longtime resident of South Road, died peacefully at his residence, Sunday, October 30, 2005, following a short illness. Born in Manhattan, June 3, 1929, he was the son of the late Roy and Margaret (Lynch) Wheeler and the husband for over 50 years of Shirley L. (Hakes) Wheeler of Cropseyville who survives. Mr. Wheeler was a graduate of Troy High School and earned an associates degree in Animal Husbandry from SUNY-Cobleskill Agricultural and Technological College. On October 13, 1950, he enlisted in the United States Air Force. After serving more than 21 years, he retired as a master sergeant and was honorably discharged from duty August 31, 1972. For several years, he was employed by Bryce Realty in Troy and more recently was co-owner of the former TADS Convenience Store in Brunswick. Mr. Wheeler retired in 1978. He was a member of Hope United Methodist Church in Eagle Mills and enjoyed cooking and baking. His life's ambition in his later years was to make the perfect chocolate cake. In his quiet time, he enjoyed baking, cooking and woodworking. In addition to his wife he is survived by his three children, Katherine (David) Ventker of Virginia Beach, Va., Michael (Lisa) Wheeler of Poestenkill and William E. Wheeler of Cropseyville; four grandchildren, Sarah and Emily Ventker of Va. and Kyle and Morgan Wheeler of Poestenkill; a sister-in-law, Betsy Brenenstuhl; and several nieces and nephews. An infant grandson, John David Ventker, predeceased Mr. Wheeler. A memorial service, with reception to follow, will be held on Wednesday, November 2, 2005, beginning at 11:00 a.m. at Hope United Methodist Church in Eagle Mills with Rev. Dave Martin officiating. Interment with military honors will be held in the Gerald B.H. Solomon-Saratoga National Cemetery at the convenience of the family. In lieu of flowers, contributions, if desired, may be made to the Hope United Methodist Church Memorial Fund, 566 Brunswick Road, Troy, NY 12180 or to the ALS Regional Center, 315 S. Manning Blvd., Albany, NY 12208 in memory of Thomas A. Wheeler. Service details are under the direction of the Howard B. Tate & Son Funeral Home Inc., 2237 NY-7, located in Raymertown.
