THOMSON, Stanley Earle1939 - 2015On September 2 Stan passed away in Lamont Health Care Centre at age 76. He will be forever loved and remembered by his wife of 49 years, Blanche (Gourlay); son Morgan; daughter Heather (Kenny) Smethurst; dear friends Jim and Karin. Predeceased by parents, Doug (2004) and Dorothy (2010).Stan was born and raised in Edmonton. After completing grade 12 at Victoria Composite he began a career in horticulture with Tyler''s Greenhouses, then City of Edmonton Parks and Rec. Took courses from both Olds College and Guelph, ON, and later went on to establish his own greenhouses Stanson and Zone3, 1977-2006.A Queen Scout with Boy Scouts of Canada, he was troop leader, then Scout Master, instructing outdoor skills; hiking, wilderness camping, mountain climbing, canoeing, sailing. A life- member of Skyline Hikers, he led many hikes in the Canadian Rockies as Chief Leader. Stan had a keen sense of humor, and infectious laugh. Hosted a popular radio talk show on gardening, ''What''s Up'' for 37 years. Guest speaker for many groups and offered courses on greenhouse management and procedures to include hands-on sessions. He was instrumental in the design and creation of Edmonton''s Muttart Conservatory, opened 1976 and the Healing and Meditation Garden at Lamont Health Care Centre for all to enjoy, dedicated 2011.Being artistic and creative, Stan''s passion was sculpting in his studio, creating gargoyles and celtic creatures for yards and gardens. Other interests were antiques; classic cars, trucks and tractors; x-c skiing; loved all critters and growing things – always a cat or dog by his side or rescuing a snake, skunk or seal among many. A beer in the sun with a good book was much enjoyed. His favorite getaway was SouthBeach at Seymour Arm. At Stan''s request, there will be no service. Cremation has taken place. He battled with expressive aphasia for 5 years and complications of strokes, which was emotionally draining on him. He is now gone home, free of pain and resting in peace.
