->MOUNT DESERT - Ruth Whittle Cary, 83, passed away Dec. 22, 2012, after a brief illness. She was born in Martinsville, Va., the daughter of Flora (Redd) and Henry Drewry Whittle. Ruth graduated from Martinsville High School and attended Beaver College, now Arcadia University. In 1950 she married Campbell Cary in Martinsville. They moved to Wilmington, Del., in 1953, Brunswick, in 1985, and Mount Desert Island, in 1998. Ruth raised and loved her three children, and was an active volunteer and community member. She enjoyed sailing, golf, hiking, traveling, gardening and had a lifelong interest in learning. Summers were reserved for spending time at Pond Island, off Milbridge. She visited Pond Island for the first time on her honeymoon and quickly fell in love with its rustic and rugged beauty. All of the Pond Island "cousins" quickly became family and helped create years of amazing memories. Known for her hospitality, Ruth had an ability to make everyone she met feel special and welcome. Those feelings were returned in abundance in recent weeks and her family is very appreciative of all of the cards, calls and assistance from family and friends near and far.In addition to her husband of 62 years, Campbell Cary, Ruth is survived by her three children, Mary Campbell Cary and husband, Greg Frosberg, of Anchorage, Alaska, Whittle Redd Cary and wife, Ruth K. Cary, of Huntsville, Ala., and Sarah Cary Robinson and husband, Keith P. Robinson, of Steuben. She has five grandchildren, Brian Campbell Cary, Amanda Rae Cary, William Stafford Cary, Cary Burgess Robinson and Keith Whittle Robinson. She is also survived by her sister-in-law, Denise Whittle Derham. She loved all her nieces and nephews on both sides of the family. She was predeceased by her parents; and two brothers, Henry Drewry Whittle and John Redd Whittle.A memorial service celebrating Ruth's life will be held 1 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 5, at Somesville Union Meeting House, UCC. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that donations be made in Ruth's memory to Somesville Union Meeting House, UCC, P.O. Box 96, Mount Desert, ME 04660.
