Rose Amy Covington Allen, 84, Shelbyville, died Sunday, January 5, 2014 at Jewish Hospital following an illness. A native of Richmond, she was the daughter of the late Joe Sy and Mentie Cobb Covington. She was the widow of John Allen, Jr. She was a graduate of Lincoln Institute and a nursing assistant for many years at Shelby Manor. She was a member of Bethel A.M.E. Church, where she had served as an usher, stewardess, deaconess, missionary and choir member. In addition to her husband and parents, two sons, Bernard F. Allen and Lindsey F. Allen, Sr. and four siblings, Daniel Scott Covington, Sr., Noah Covington, Lydia Davis and Paul Covington, preceded her in death. Survivors include one daughter, Janelda A. Dawkins of Shelbyville; one son, David F. Allen of Shelbyville; four sisters, Sue Ellis of Shelbyville and Frances Thompson, Fannie Covington and Margaret Woolfolk, all of Lexington; one brother, Joe Covington of Louisville; one daughter-in-law, Vivian Allen of Shelbyville; three grandchildren; four great-grandchildren and a host of nieces, nephews, other family members and friends. Funeral services will be at 1 p.m., Friday, January 10, 2014 at Bethel A.M.E. Church with visitation at the church 6-9 p.m. on Thursday. Rev. MacArthur Pendleton will deliver the eulogy.
