Avis de décès de Robert-Theodore Engel


ENGEL Robert Theodore Engel, age 78 of Trumbull, passed away at Bridgeport Hospital on Thursday, November 22, 2007, after an aggressive battle with lung cancer. He was born on December 17, 1928 in Flushing, N.Y. and was raised in Bayside Queens, N.Y. He was predeceased by his parents, Berthold and Helen Engel and a sister, Charlotte Engel. A graduate of Bayside High School, Class of 1946, he immediately enlisted in the U.S. Navy and served from 1946 to 1949, and then again in the U.S. Navy Reserves from 1950 to 1954, as a RadioMan Class A. He was stationed in Winter Harbor Maine, CommSta, Guam and Adak, Ala. holding Top Secret Clearance. Robert received a World War II Victory Ribbon. Robert attended the N.Y. Radio and Tele. Institute of New York, graduated from Hofstra University with a B.S. in Physics, attended the University of Michigan Engineering Program, New York Institute of Technology, Polytechnic Institute in New York and the University of Bridgeport majoring in B.S.E.E. Mr. Engel started his microwave engineering career at Sperry Gyroscope Company in 1951. He then worked at Fairfield Camera Instruments, Airborne Instruments, Laboratories, Inc.(with Top Secret Clearance), Adler Electronics, Inc., Singer Instrumentation Co. Robert's career culminated at Norden Systems of Norwalk, where he was a senior. development engineer with secret security clearance. After briefly retiring, opening two Subway Sandwich Shops in New York and Connecticut, he returned to Norden Systems from 1982 to 1987, where he developed the Impatt Oscillator. After a second retirement, Robert returned to work at Off Track Betting in Norwalk where he was a favorite among the customers until September 2002. Mr. Engel was a member of the VFW Post 399 in Westport for more than 20 years. He volunteered for many charity events, including events for handicapped children and marched in many Veteran's Day parades representing his country. An avid ham radio operator, card and pool player, Robert also loved to dance and listen to music. He loved to fish, smoke his own meat and make his own wine. Robert also participated in many Chili Cook-off Contests where showmanship was as important as the food. He will be deeply missed and is survived by daughter, Carolyn Denise Engel; daughter, Debra Ann Allen and her husband, Mark Allen; son, Robert Berthold Engel and his wife, Michele Engel. He is also survived by four granddaughters, Melody and Carly Allen and Jessica and Julia Engel. He will also be missed by his former wife and lifelong friend, Helen Engel. There will be no calling hours and burial and services will be private.
