ROBERTALAN NEALASHEVILLE - Dr. Robert Alan Neal, 82, of Givens Estates, died on March 3, 2011 after a long, courageous battle with cancer.Robert was born in Casper Wyoming. He graduated from the University of Denver in 1948 with a Bachelor of Science degree. In the United States Air Force (USAF) he trained as a pilot. After serving on active duty with the air force for ten years he resigned and entered a PhD. program in Biochemistry at Vanderbilt University, graduating in 1963. In the meantime, he continued his flying career as a member of the USAF Reserve rising to the rank of Major General on retirement in 1981. Upon graduating from Vanderbilt, he undertook a post-doctoral year at the University of Chicago in the research specialty of toxicology. He returned to Vanderbilt where he continued his research in toxicology and was as a member of the teaching faculty of the medical school. During his tenure at Vanderbilt, he served on a number of committees for the federal government, academic institutions and industry. These committees included the Food and Nutrition Board of the National Academy of Sciences; the Toxicology Study Section of the United States Public Health Services; the Environmental Protection Agency's Federal Insecticide, Rodenticide Scientific Advisory Board,; member of EPA's Executive Committee of the Scientific Advisory Board; member of EPA's National Drinking Water Advisory Council; member of Technical Advisory Board, Harvard School of Public Health; member of Technical Advisory Panel, Center for Environmental Management, Tufts University; member of Advisory Committee of the Environmental Health Sciences Center, John Hopkins University; member of Technical Advisory Committee, Monsanto Corporation. He was also a member of the editorial committees of eleven scientific journals in the area of nutrition and toxicology including as the primary editor of two journals in the area of toxicology. He was the author of over 150 articles in scientific journals. He was a member of the following professional societies, Sigma XI, the American Association for the Advancement of Science, the Society of Toxicology, the American Institute of Nutrition, the American Society of Biochemists, and the American Society of Pharmacology and Experimental Therapeutics. In 1981, he became the president of the Chemical Industry Institute of Toxicology (now the The Hamner Institutes for Health Sciences) in the Research Triangle Park, North Carolina. residing in Raleigh, North Carolina. This institution conducted research into the possible harmful properties of industrial chemicals. While at CIIT, he served as an Adjunct Professor of Pharmacology at Duke University, and as an Associate Member, Graduate Faculty, North Carolina State University. He retired from CIIT in 1988 and returned to Vanderbilt University where he was awarded the title of Professor Emeritus.He was an avid fly fisherman all of his life. Upon retirement, he pursued his passion for fishing and spending time with his family in Emerald Isle, NC. He was proceded in death by his son, Paul Allen Neal.He is survived by his wife, Patricia of 52 years; daughter, Julie Neal Mehan, her husband, Conrad, granddaughters, Lindsey and Paige of Ashburn, Va.; daughter, Dr. Stacey Neal Ibrahim, her husband, Dr. George Ibrahim, granddaughters, Taylor and Khoury and grandson, George Philip, of Asheville.The family will hold private services. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Four Seasons Hospice, 571 South Allen Road, Flat Rock, NC 28731.
