NEWTON Robert Michael (Mike) Newton Mike Newton (USN CDR-Ret.), longtime resident of Fleming Island, Florida, passed away suddenly October 23, 2013. Mike was a loving husband to his wife of 24 years, Rhoda (Hauser) Newton, a devoted, proud father of Charles Newton, and brother to sisters Patricia Newton-Lee of Leesburg, FL and Pauline Bullard of Arvada, CO. Mike was born in Ann Arbor, Michigan on October 23, 1958 and is preceded in death by his father, Robert Olen Newton and mother, Agnes VanAssche Newton. Mike enlisted in the United States Navy in 1978 and had a long, successful naval career culminating in a Command Tour at CNATTU JAX located on Jacksonville Naval Air Station. He was awarded the Meritorious Service Medal (3), the Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal (4), and the Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal (3) before he retired in July 2006. Mike went on to work in Washington D.C. for Alenia Aermacchi as a Logistics Manager for the G222 AAF program. Mike delighted in the simple passions of golf and the Florida Gators, while helping anyone in need whether it was a neighbor, shipmate, or stranger. Quick with a joke or string trick, Mike brought joy to everyone he met. He lived his faith as a child of God and faithfully served as the treasurer at St. Peter's Lutheran Church. He will be greatly missed. Fair winds and following seas. The viewing will be at Holly Hill Funeral Home, 3601 Old Jennings Road, Middleburg, FL 32068, on Friday, November 1, 2013 between 6:00 PM and 9:00 PM. Funeral Services will be on November 2, 2013 at St. Peter's Lutheran Church, 1614 Blanding Blvd, Middleburg, FL 32068 at 10:00 AM with a luncheon to follow. The family is requesting in lieu of flowers, that donations be made in Mike's name to the USO or St. Peter's Lutheran Church Benevolence Fund.
