Robert James Curran, 52 ASHEVILLE, N.C. -- Robert James Curran, 52, of Asheville, N.C., died April 24, 2007, at Hunter McGuire VA hospital while awaiting a heart transplant. Born in Portland, Nov. 28, 1954, he was the son of Francis (Ike) Curran and the former Barbara Fowles. Bobby attended South Portland schools, finishing high school in Ft. Wayne, Ind. Following a four year tour in the U.S. Navy he went on to earn a B.S. in Earth Sciences from USM and an Associates Degree in Marine Science from SMVTI. Bobby's life long affinity for the sea led to a position at the University of Miami as Captain for the research vessel, Columbus Iselin, where he met and married his soulmate, Joanne. He later was employed by Marine Spill Response Corp., overseeing training for other Responders. During this time period he contracted Dilated Cardiomyopathy, which ended his career at sea. Like his mother before him, Bobby was known for his personal honesty and integrity. He too was passionate about justice and equality and sought to affect change by volunteering for the Democratic Party. Blessed with a keen mind, he was an avid reader and possessed a penchant for current events and history. In 2003 the family moved from Florida to Asheville, N.C., where Bobby experienced a rebirth of spirit through his connection with the Blue Ridge Mountains. He would lovingly refer to his life as having two phases: the first as a seaman and the later as a mountain man. Bobby's condition deteriorated where the need for a heart transplant was eminent. He exhibited great courage and bravery throughout his long battle with heart failure. Were it not for hope the heart would break. In addition to his wife Joanne, daughter Rachael and son Shane, he is survived by his father, Francis Curran and step-mother, Leola of South Portland; his sister, Catherine Curran of South Portland; his sister, Lisa Jones and husband Tom of Cape Elizabeth; step-father, Frank Fowles and three nephews. A private memorial service will be held at Riverside Cemetery, Cape Elizabeth. GO SOX! Memorial contributions may be made to: The United Network for Organ Sharing 700 N.
