Retired Sgt. 1st Class Robert C. Madden of Pensacola, Fla., passed away Jan. 4, 2008, at West Florida Hospital after a lengthy illness. He was 66 years old. Born in Cross City, Fla., Robert was the sixth of seven boys born to Jesse C. and Maudie A. Madden. Robert graduated at Escambia Farms High School and attended Saint Leo College in South Florida where he earned his associate of arts degree. His hobbies included golf, saltwater fishing and boating. He was also an avid NASCAR fan. In June 1959, Robert entered the U.S. Army. He was with the 82nd and 101st Airborne Divisions and served in Korea and Vietnam. His last tour of duty was with the Full-Time Recruiting Force of the Florida Army National Guard where he distinguished himself as Top Recruiter of the Year in 1982. Robert was preceded in death by his parents, Jesse C. Madden and Maudie A. Madden; his brothers, Curtis Madden Jr., James C. Madden, Franklin D. Madden and his son, Larry Madden; his half-brothers, Woodrow Madden and Vick Madden; and half-sister, Eleanor Vann. He is survived by his wife of 47 years, Diane Madden; his brothers, Joe T. Madden, Jesse L. Madden and Millard D. Madden; his children, Robert C. Madden Jr., Terry L. Madden, Kimberly A. Traub and Scott T. Madden; one half- sister, Gwen Montgomery; 13 grandchildren; and one great-grandchild. A visitation will be held on Tuesday from 6 to 8 p.m. at Whitehurst-Powell Funeral Home in Crestview, Fla. The funeral will be Wednesday, Jan. 9 at 11 a.m. with the Rev. Don Thomas officiating. Burial will be at Barrancas Na-tional Cemetery, Pensacola Naval Air Station. Whitehurst-Powell Funeral Home is in charge of ar-rangements.
