Robert Bates Nicholas, 79, died Feb. 13, 2009, in Oak Bluffs on Martha's Vineyard, Mass. He was born in West Sayville, N.Y., and lived in Vero Beach and Edgartown, Mass. He enlisted in the Army in 1950 as a second lieutenant and served as chief purchasing officer at Camp Ruker, Ala. Before retirement in 1988, he was a senior vice president at Aetna Life and Casualty. His career spanned executive positions with the Federal Reserve Bank of New York, Mobil Oil and Atlantic Richfield. He served on the boards of MBIA Inc., Hartford Graduate Center, Hartford Dispensary and Hartford Stage Company in Connecticut. He was a member of the Denison University board of trustees, serving as vice chairman of the Finance & Audit Committee and chairman of the Annual Fund Campaign. He also was a member of the U.S. Chamber of Commerce Council on Trends and Perspectives. He was a graduate of Denison University in Granville, Ohio, and received his master's degree from the Columbia University School of Business. Survivors include his wife of 53 years, Sally; sons, John of Summit, N.J., and Paul of Berwyn, Pa.; daughter, Sally Prendergast of Encinitas, Calif.; and four grandchildren. SERVICES: A memorial service will be at 11 a.m. Feb. 21 at Faith Community Church in Edgartown, Mass. Arrangements are by Chapman, Cole and Gleason Funeral Home in Oak Bluffs.
