SPRINGFIELD - Robert Arthur "Bob" Ingalls, 91, died Sunday, March 30, 2014, at Brookwood in North Springfield. He was born April 9, 1922, in Haverhill, Mass., the son of Edward A. and Mildred (Peabody) Ingalls. He graduated from Haverhill High School, class of 1940, and from Wentworth Institute, class of 1942. He was employed with Fellows Gear Shaper Co. from 1942 to 1944. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II from 1944 to 1946. After his discharge from the Navy, he returned to Fellows Gear Shaper Co., where he was employed in the engineering department from 1946 to 1956. He was then chief engineer and vice president of Great Eastern Mfg. Co., and chief engineer and later an engineering consultant for Joy Manufacturing Co. Then he was one of the founders of Excet Corp. in Springfield, and president of the company until 1995. He held eight U.S. patents in the fields of gearing and rotary compressor technology. He was past chairman of Twin States Chapter 40 of the Society of Manufacturing Engineers. He enjoyed jazz music. In recent years, he played the electric guitar and sang with the Bob Brown Band and at senior centers, nursing homes and adult daycare facilities. He also enjoyed swimming and sailing, having designed and built a kayak and a small sailboat. He was a member of the First Congregational Church in Springfield, and served as church schoolteacher, committee member, deacon and moderator. Survivors include a daughter, Candi Mason of Kissimmee, Fla.; three granddaughters; a brother, David Ingalls of Boxford, Mass.; and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his wife of 60 years, Lorraine Faith (Hersey) Ingalls, on Aug. 23, 2004; a son, Brad Ingalls in 2013; and a brother, Edward A. Ingalls Jr. in 2007. Friends may call from 2 to 4 p.m.Thursday, April 3, 2014, at Davis Memorial Chapel in Springfield. Burial will be in the Oakland Cemetery in Springfield, at a later date. Memorial contributions may be made to a local music program.
