He is survived by his daughter, Alison (Andrew) Elder; granddaughters, Meghan Georgia and Cory Elizabeth Elder; 3 nieces and 1 nephew. Richard was a 1952 graduate of Virginia Polytechnic Institute and served in the Air Force as a pilot instructor. He was a residential and commercial architect, a long-time member of Rotary and a Paul Harris Fellow.Services will be held privately in Fredericksburg, VA. Memorial donations may be directed to the Rotary Foundation, the Fredericksburg Regional SPCA, 10819 Courthouse Rd., Fredericksburg VA 22409, or to the Virginia Tech Alumni Association, Holtzman Alumni Center (0102), 901 Prices Fork Rd., Blacksburg VA 24061.
