ALBANY Norman John Gates passed away peacefully at home on Tuesday, June 15, 2004. Born in New York City on May 21, 1928, he was the son of the late Ernest and Eunice Gates. He was raised in Port Henry, N.Y. of the Adirondack Region and graduated from Port Henry High. He moved to Albany in the early 1960s and was a graduate of Hudson Valley Technical Institute of Troy and received his B.S. from Oswego State University and his master's of science from SUNY at Albany. Norman Gates was a veteran of the Korean Conflict. He was not only an avid sportsman but an impressive record-breaking athlete, the first inductee into the HVCC Hall of Fame, known to many as Norm POPS Gates in reference to his shooting ability. He played briefly with the Harlem Globetrotters in 1948 but chose family over a sports career at the time. He played on various semi-pro football teams, scouted and reported to our own New York Giants training camp. Once again, his career was interrupted, this time by war, but he still took this opportunity to showcase his talent by becoming a key member of the Munich Basketball Squad in Germany. He emotionally summed up his own sports experiences by saying, Basketball is my fame, but Football was my game. Mr. Gates earned his special education certification from Russell Sage College in Albany and started his career as an educator teaching industrial arts at Phillip Livingston Middle School and School #20. He loved being involved with youth so much that he became one of the directors of the Lincoln Park Summer Program in 1965, never missing a season in over 38 years. Mr. Gates spent approximately 24 years at Hackett Middle School as an assistant principal where he was greatly respected and looked up to by his colleagues and the kids who equally impacted his life as well as his impacted many of theirs. Mr Gates retired in 1992. Upon his retirement, he enjoyed much time in his garden and could often be found about town and surrounded by his friends at the Elbow Room. Mr. Gates was greatly loved and will be tremendously missed by many. Husband of Curt; father of Gina, Vikki, Leslie, Norman and Kim; grandfather of Maurice Williams; brother of Charmaine Johnson; brother-in-law of Tillie and Juanita DuBose; uncle of Tracy and Tillman DuBose of Edgertown, Mass. Funeral services will be held Saturday, 9:30 a.m. in the Daniel Keenan Funeral Home, 490 Delaware Ave. Relatives and friends are invited and may call at the funeral home Friday 4-7 p.m. Interment, Memory's Garden Cemetery, Colonie.
