->AUGUSTA -- Retired police officer ... Waterville has lost a kind, respected and well liked individual.Norman Richard Hutchison, also known as Hutch by many friends, beloved husband, devoted father and grandfather died Sunday, May 6, 2007, at the Veterans Affairs Hospital, Togus.He was born in St. Francis, one of 12 children born to Henry Berryman Hutchison and Tharsile Marie Cormier.Norman had been a member of the Civilian Conservation Corps as a youth and enlisted in the Marine Corps in November, 1942, serving his country in the South Pacific Islands. Serving with the 1st Marine Division, he fought at Guadacanal, Bouganville, and Vella la Vella. He received his honorable discharge in November 1945. He came to Waterville and joined the Police Department and served 25 years until his retirement in November 1970.He was a former member of the Kennebec Sheriff Department, having served under the late Chief John DeWinter. He was also a former reserve member of the Fairfield and Winslow Police Department.After retiring from the Waterville Police Force he went on to serve as security guard at Van Leer Keyes Fibre where he served until he was forced to retire due to illness in 1982. He was a communicant of St. Vincent de Paul Roman Catholic Church in Holiday, Fla., where he had made his home since 1990.He was a life member of the 3rd and 4th Degree Knights of Columbus Council No. 148, and was also a life member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and Disabled American Veterans. Norman was a member of the Waterville Elks and the American Legion. He was very well known in the Waterville Community, and he will he remembered by his family and friends for his loving heart and generosity, his wonderful sense of humor, his indomitable spirit and his deep religious faith. He was a man of undisputed integrity who loved his job, city and family deeply and because these qualities don't often enough meet the threshold of newsworthiness hardly ever had his name in the paper.He was cited by the City of Waterville in 1970 for dedication to his duties in serving the Waterville community and citizens. In 1988 he and his family were honored as the Family of the Year by the Knights of Columbus.Besides his parents, he was predeceased by his six sisters and five brothers.He is survived and will be missed dearly by his loving wife, Marie-Berthe Hutchison; also by two daughters, June L'Heureux and her husband, Dan, and Julie Hutchison; five sons, Norman M. Hutchison and his wife, Candy, Paul Hutchison and his wife, Mary Ellen, Jim Hutchison and his friend, Cindy Owings, Bruce Hutchison and his wife, Mary, and Rob Hutchison and his wife, Lisa; seven granddaughters, Amie, Kasey, Kelly, Sarah, Abby, Carli, and Jill; seven grandsons, Matthew, Caleb, Ryan, Luke, Tyler, Jack, and Cole; two great-grandchildren, Cooper and Sadie; as well as many nieces and nephews.Visiting hours will be held from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. Friday, May 11, at Veilleux Funeral Home, 8 Elm St., Waterville. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated 11 a.m. Saturday, May 12, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Pleasant Street, Waterville. Burial will follow at St. Francis Catholic Cemetery, Grove Street, Waterville.In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Norman's memory to Beal's Hospitality House, 1 V.A. Center, Togus, ME 04330; St. Joseph's Parish Building Fund, 3 Appleton St., Waterville, ME 04901; and Ursuline Sisters, Waterville Community, 1 Angela Way, Waterville, ME 04901.
