NORMAN RUSSELL JOHNSON - CHARLOTTE - Norman Russell Johnson, a resident of Charlotte, died on Wednesday, March 7, 2012, in Fletcher Allen Health Care, following a short illness. Norm was born in East Hartford, Conn. on June 3, 1943, the son of Norman and Doris Johnson. He grew up and attended schools in that area and was a graduate of the University of Vermont. Norm and his first wife, Kathy Roszman, moved to Vermont where he was employed by General Electric. Norm worked at General Electric and General Dynamics in several positions until his retirement. Norm was later married to Kris Engstrom of Shelburne. Norm's greatest love was his family, particularly his many grandchildren, who called him Nopa. He was always available to help with projects for family and friends, especially if it meant he could spend hours on a riding mower cutting the grass. Always active in a variety of sports and a strong supporter of UVM hockey, in recent years Norm became an avid hiker and completed the Long Trail. He then began section hiking the Appalachian Trail and in the summer of 2011 completed his last section on Mount Washington. His trail name, Slojo, befitted his steady but deliberate progress. Norm is survived by his mother, Doris Johnson of Kingwood, Texas; his children, Erik Johnson and his wife, Vanessa, of Alameda, Calif., Erika Mansur and her husband, David, of Phoenix, Ariz., and Britta Johnson of Burlington; sisters, Carolyn Delorey, Ellen Craig, Chris Koerner, and Bethea Norris, and their families; his partner, Kate Lampton of Charlotte; his grandchildren, Hazel and Lula Johnson, Max and Colton Mansur, and Kate's grandchildren, Dylann and Sully Swearingen, Tabor, Ben and Adelia Crary, Jameson, Anderson and Treson McEnaney, and Katie Shattie. Norm's family would like to thank Dr. Chris Nunnink and the staff at the Vermont Center for Cancer Medicine and the staffs of the Fletcher Allen emergency room and intensive care units for their compassionate care of Norm during his illness. A celebration of Norm's life will be held at a later date. Arrangements are in the care of Stephen C. Gregory & Son Cremation Service, Shelburne. Donations in his memory may be made to the Appalachian Trail Conservancy, P.O. Box 807, Harpers Ferry, WV 25425, or to the Green Mountain Club, 4711 Waterbury-Stowe Road, Waterbury Center, VT 05677.
