CARNEY, Michael David 49, of New Port Richey, died Monday, Oct. 25, 2010. Born in St. Petersburg, he grew up in the Tampa Bay area, as well as Northern California, Connecticut and Mexico City. Son of the late Thomas M. Carney, state legislator, Mike was a manager at Honeywell for 26 years. He is survived by his beloved wife, Susan, "the best gift he ever got," and his treasured son, Evan. He cherished the moments they shared together, whether it was tinkering under the hood of a Z, or lobstering in the Keys, or wresting away something their golden retriever, Cheyenne, shouldn't be chewing. He also leaves behind his mother, Dolores Shipp of Palm Harbor; stepfather J. Raymond Shipp; sisters Kathleen Carney of Boston and Maureen Lux of La Jolla, CA; brother Stephen Carney of Long Beach, CA; as well as a niece, nephews and myriad other loved ones. Decades of happy memories will fill the gap left in his extended family, led by Robert and Nancy Dalton, along with their children and grandchildren. To those who didn't know him well, he probably seemed very private. But to anyone dear to him, he always had open arms and an open heart -- keeping them close even if they were far away. A once-terrible golfer, he persevered at the game he loved until he could elicit admiring murmurs on his drives. There he showed the same determination, attention to detail and ardor for excellence that he brought to everything he did, whether work or play. A self-taught engineer and builder, he went from fashioning his own stereo speakers as a teen to designing the rooms of his dream house. He found happiness in the silence of a putting green, or the roar of a Grand Prix.Ever-quick to check on the welfare of those around him, accommodating their needs, he in turn would defer compliments and decline attention. First to praise others, he was last to divulge his own accomplishments. And his sense of humor broke through his sometime reserve, when he'd interject a wicked comment at the perfect moment, cracking a bright smile and flashing his beautiful blue eyes. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to Evan's educational fund. Donations, made in care of Evan Carney, can be sent to Achieva Credit Union, attention: Niki Miller, 33715 U.S. Highway 19 N, Palm Harbor, FL 34684. A memorial service is scheduled for 11 am Saturday, Oct. 30, at Sylvan Abbey, 2853 Sunset Point Road, Clearwater.
