Mrs. Galle is also survived by 12 great grandchildren. In her fifties and sixties, Mary discovered that besides being a great wife and mother, she had an additional calling to become a volunteer for many different organizations. She was the North Yonkers Chairperson for the March of Dimes, and was instrumental in founding the Mothers and Sisters Guild at Sacred Heart Grade School. As her children grew, she increased her volunteer efforts, joining the Capuchin Auxiliary at Sacred Heart Church, and eventually serving as President of that organization for many years. She also served as President of the St. Joseph's Medical Center Ladies Auxiliary, President of the Queen's Daughter Day Care Auxiliary, President of the Guardian Angel Chapel Fund Auxiliary in Wassaic, NY, and Treasurer of the local chapter for the Sisters of Charity Auxiliary. She was also actively involved at Yonkers General Hospital and the Yonkers Birthright Program. Her proudest effort was when a young Capuchin priest stationed in Honduras called Mary and told her of a young boy who needed life saving surgery at the Mayo Clinic in Minnesota. Mary immediately began to organize a grand fundraising effort, from which the proceeds were used to facilitate the transportation, care, and rehabilitation of the young man at the Mayo Clinic. Many of these organizations would attempt to honor Mary, but being a woman of great humility; she would decline these honors, and be completely satisfied with a simple "Thank You." She continued to serve these organizations until she was well into her seventies. In addition to her many humanitarian efforts, Mary was a strong presence in the lives of her family and friends. She is also survived by many devoted nieces and nephews. Mrs. Galle also enjoyed traveling, and would share her photos and stories of her trips to Hawaii, Ireland, the Canary Islands, the Bahamas, Jamaica, and the Virgin Islands. She especially enjoyed summers at her son Denis' summer residence in Dutchess County, where she would entertain her grandchildren, family, and friends. Visiting hours will be at Whalen & Ball Funeral Home on Sunday from 7 to 9pm and Monday from 2 to 4pm and 7 to 9pm.
A Mass of Christian Burial in Sacred Heart Church will be held on Tuesday, February 15 at 11am. Interment in St. Joseph's Cemetery. The family requests that in lieu of flowers, donations may be made to St. Cabrini Nursing Home in Dobbs Ferry, where she received excellent care for the past 3 and a half years, or to the Capuchin Burse Fund in the name of either Fr. Bede Scully or Fr. Didicus Joseph Moran.
