Her parents were Marguerite Sneed Hughes and Fred Lee Hughes. She was the eldest of four daughters. She majored in English literature at Vanderbilt University, Nashville, Tennessee and then returned to Jacksonville to teach English literature at her alma mater, Robert E. Lee High School. On January 20, 1940, she married John Kiely of Tacoma, Washington. During World War II, they moved to Southern California, where John, an engineer, built Liberty and Victory ships for Calship. She traveled the world over with John on Bechtel business. But they also shared a love for adventure that led them to far places. They hiked to the base camp of Mount Everest, fished the rivers of Iceland and New Zealand and backpacked in the Sierras. Margaret Lee was an active member of the Woodside-Atherton Garden Club and authored two books, as well as short stories and articles for local papers. She devoted many years of service to the Woodside Priory School and Padua Kitchen in Menlo Park, California. Margaret Lee was a Dame of Malta. She lived a vigorous, joyful and giving life. She is survived by five children: John R. Kiely III of Dundee, MI. (wife Pam Oatis and sons Joss and Broer); Peggy Harris of Cornelius, OR (husband Lawrence W.
