ANDREW, Margaret Elizabeth 95, passed away on January 9, 2006 in Halifax, Nova Scotia with family by her side. She will be sadly missed by her daughter Carol (Andrew) Walker and son-in-law John Walker of Bedford, granddaughter Christine Walker of Toronto, grandson Brian Walker and wife Angela of Halifax, and niece Margot (Kay) Hillman and family of Markham, Ontario. Margaret was born in Orangeville, Ontario, the daughter of the late William Irvine and Olive (McMillan) Irvine. She was predeceased by her husband, Col./Dr. John Andrew, and her sister, Helen (Irvine) Kay. Margaret graduated from the University of Toronto in Occupational Therapy in 1932 and worked in hospitals in Cobourg, Kingston and Hamilton, Ontario. In 1944, she joined the Royal Canadian Army Medical Corps and served overseas during WWII in England where she was promoted to the rank of Captain. Upon her return to Canada, she continued to serve in the RCAMC and helped to organize Occupational Therapy Departments in military hospitals across Canada. Following the death of her husband in 1956, Margaret remained in Ottawa in the community of Manor Park where she lived for over 40 years. She was a strong and inedependent woman who raised her daughter alone, had numerous friends and enjoyed many activities such as gardening, curling, swimming and bridge. In 1994, Margaret moved to Nova Scotia to be near her daughter and family. She lived for over twelve years at Melville Heights in Halifax where she made new friends and enjoyed her apartment with the view of the Northwest Arm. Margaret's family would like to especially thank PCW's Kim, Heather, Rose and Sheila, the staff of Melville Heights, Dr. Karen Clarke, and the staff of the QEII, especially the nursing staff on unit 8.3, for their care and kindness to Margaret. A memorial service to celebrate Margaret's life will be held on Saturday, January 13th at 2 p.m. in the chapel at Melville Heights with Rev. David Hart officiating. There will be no visitation. As she wished, Margaret will be buried with her beloved husband John in Beechwood Cemetery in Ottawa. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation or the Canadian Cancer Society.
