Avis de décès de Marc Johnson

Marc Johnson, 62     SOUTH CHINA --Marc Johnson, 62, died peacefully at Maine General Hospital on Nov. 29, 2006, after a long illness, surrounded by his family and friends.      Born Feb. 11, 1944, in New Britain, Conn., to Arnold E. and Lenore Erickson Johnson, Marc spent the best of his growing years in Southington, Conn., where he graduated from high school in 1962. He became the first scout in Southington to earn the Eagle Scout Award. He graduated from the University of Connecticut with a BS in Forestry in 1967 and from UNH with a Master in Science in Forestry in 1971.      He was an avid outdoorsman and was very proud of climbing the New England 4000 foot mountains, all 63 of them. He often noted that he climbed Mount Washington about 40 times in his lifetime.      In later years, he loved to travel and hike in Europe, Canada and the US. He canoed many rivers in New England and Canada, and he followed philosopher Henry Thoreau's water and hiking route of the mid-1800s in Maine with great interest.     His 23-year Maine career began with Scott Paper Company in 1971 in Waterville, in real estate and forestry, working his way up to become president of Skylark Inc., Scott's real estate subsidiary. He retired in 1995, started a forestry consultant business and very much enjoyed working on his and Holly's Winterberry Tree Farm.     He also became a historian of the log drives in Maine and was most proud of his efforts to photographically capture the essence of Maine's Last Log Drive on the Kennebec River from 1971 to 1976.     He was proud of his memberships in the New England Society of American Foresters, whom he served as the Maine correspondent, Small Woodland Owners Association of Maine, Maine Woodcarvers Association, the American Tree Farm System, Maine Audubon, the Pine Tree State Arboretum, the Nature Conservancy and the Cornell Lab of Ornithology. He loved the mountains, forest, wetlands and birds and was an accomplished photographer and woodcarver.     He also believed in community service as the president of the China Historical Society, the Comprehensive Land Use Committee and the Town of China Forestry Committee for a number of years.      Marc was loved by many and will be sadly missed.     He is survived by his loving wife Holly Johnson; and by his brother and sister-in-law, Kurt and Jane Johnson of Southington, Conn.; his nephews Eric and Gary Johnson and their families; his dear aunt and uncle, Shirlee and Gordon Raymond of Southington, Conn.; his stepchildren Curt and Melanie Eynon and granddaughter Kimberly of Belfast, and Sherry and Stanley Murphy and grandchildren, Nick and Jace of Brooks. He also leaves a large number of loving cousins and friends, who have all been part of his good life.      He gives thanks and appreciation to the staff of the Waterville Oncology Unit for all their help.     A memorial service will be held at the Pleasant Street Methodist Church in Waterville, on Saturday, Dec. 9, 2006, at 10 a.m.     In lieu of flowers, gifts in memory of Marc can be made to the Marc A. Johnson Memorial Fund, a scholarship to benefit University of Maine Forestry students. Checks should be made payable to:     The University of Maine Foundation    Buchanan Alumni House     Two Alumni Place     Orono, Maine 04469-5792.
