O'Neill, Lucy R. ROTTERDAM Lucy R. O'Neill, passed into eternal life on November 17, 2009 at Baptist Health Nursing and Rehabilitation Center. Lucy was born on February 10, 1919 to Lucy and Wesley Reed and had been a lifelong resident of Schen-ectady County, growing up in the city of Schen-ectady, moving to Rotterdam with her husband of 53 years, Joseph O'Neill and more recently living with her son and daughter-in-law in Duanesburg before taking residence at Baptist in May 2009. When single, Lucy was employed by the General Electric Company until 1942 with the birth of her first son, Joseph. She was a devoted wife, mother and homemaker. After World War II, she and her husband built their Cape Cod home on Helderberg Avenue, where they raised their sons. Lucy acted as bookkeeper for a number of small businesses in the area and managed her husband's home based printing business, Quotidian Press. Lucy was active in Christian women's organizations in her churches, including Carman Presbyterian and Fisher United Methodist, of late named Rotterdam United Methodist. Lucy taught a variety of grades of Sunday school for over forty years. While able, she drove a number seniors to doctor appointments and grocery shopping. Lucy also served for approximately two decades as an election inspector in the town of Rotterdam and was always up for a "good political debate." Lucy's home was open to the neighborhood and her sons always knew they could bring a friend home for lunch or dinner. She was often heard to say that she never knew how many she was fixing dinner for until they all showed up, and even then adding another plate to the table was commonplace. Lucy was predeceased by her parents, Lucy Weller (DeGraff) Reed and Wesley Reed; her husband, Joseph O'Neill, who died in January 1992; her eldest son, Joseph Wesley O'Neill who died in October 1992; and her sister, Ruth Reed Clayton. She is survived by her youngest son, the Rev. Dr. Terrence O'Neill and his wife Barbara; a niece, Diane Wood and nephew, Robert Clayton III; a grandson, Joseph and granddaughter, Dorothy and two great-grandchildren. Funeral services will take place 10:30 a.m. Friday at Rotterdam United Methodist Church. Interment will be in Schenectady Memorial on Gifford's Church Road. Memorial contributions may be made to the Rotterdam United Methodist Church, corner of Curry Rd. & Helderberg Ave., Schenectady, NY 12306.
