Athens - Lloyd Douglas Allen died March 12, 2008 in the home where he had resided for the past fifteen years. Doug was born in Ayden, NC on January 13, 1931. He grew up in eastern North Carolina and graduated from Greenville High School. He served in the U.S. Navy, and then returned to Greenville to attend East Carolina University.Before his illness, Mr. Allen was a developer and entrepreneur. Doug had the talent, vision, and ambition to see the possibilities that were blind to others and the skills to translate his dreams into realities. As a young man, his first business endeavor was the Allen-White Buick Pontiac car dealership in Lexington, NC. From there he moved to several larger dealerships in South Carolina and Georgia, and into hotel development. He was most proud of the development of a seemingly uninhabitable parcel of marshland that he molded into a beautiful residential communityóHeadquarters Plantation in Charleston. In addition, Doug developed several commercial and residential areas of Athens, GA. Most prominent of these developments were several commercial sites along Atlanta Highway, as well as the development of the last filling of Huntington Park Subdivision and Sedgefield Subdivision. Doug Allen was preceded in death by his parents Lloyd Allen and Beulah Tripp Allen of Greenville, NC and his step-son Bill Palmer of Gonzales, Louisiana.He is survived by his wife, Dr. Alta Brown Allen; sons L. Douglas Allen Jr. and wife Deborah, Thomas Page Allen and wife Beth; sister Helen Allen Hall and husband Bob, John's Island, SC; four grandchildren Page Allen White, Emily Allen, Lauren Allen, L. Douglas Allen III, and great-grandchildren Aybree and Chance White. Doug's additional surviving immediate family includes his step-children Jean Palmer Moloney and husband Jim, Joanie Palmer Randle and husband William, and James Britton Palmer. The step-grandchildren include Emmett and Angus Moloney, Mason, Abigail, Lily, and Henry Randle, James, Kacie, Blake, and Caleb Palmer.Services will be 4 p.m. Friday, March 14 at Bernstein Chapel. The family will receive friends immediately following the service in the Chapel. Additional services are scheduled for Sunday, March 16th at the Wilkerson Funeral Home in Greenville, NC. Visitation will begin at 1PM with the memorial service beginning at 2PM. Graveside services will be held at the Pinewood Cemetery, Greenville, NC.The family requests that in lieu of flowers, donations be sent to the Food Bank of Northeast Georgia, 861 Newton Bridge Rd, Athens, GA 30601.The family extends their thanks to Doug's special caregivers, Ms. Marion Hayes and Ms. April Lumpkin, Athens, GA.
