SALAMANCA – Kenneth (Ken) Clifford Carlson, 81, of Salamanca, passed away on Friday (Aug. 10, 2012), at Olean General Hospital. His wife of 61 years, Barbara, was at his side. He was born on Sept. 6, 1930, in Smethport, Pa., the son of the late Vera (Patterson) and Algot Carlson. Carlson graduated from Bradford Area High School in 1949 and served in the United States Navy for four years. On July 6, 1951, he married his high school sweetheart, Barbara Balon. He spent 38 years working as an operator on the B&O Railroad until his retirement in 1991. Carlson's many hobbies included hunting, fishing, square dancing, gardening, camping and caring for his pets. He found great joy in chaperoning and assisting with the Salamanca Marching Band/Winter Color Guard from 1979-85. He had a generous spirit and never hesitated to help his neighbors in caring for their lawns, snow blowing their driveways and repairing their lawn equipment. After retirement, he organized luncheons for the local railroad retirees where he enjoyed sharing stories of past railroading. He was a devoted fan of the Buffalo Bills and New York Yankees. He had a deep love for his six grandchildren and will be remembered as a fun and caring grandfather. Carlson is survived by his wife Barbara; a son, Stan Carlson of Salamanca; daughters Robin Carlson of Ellicottville, Laura (Ron) Steele of Charlotte, N.C., Diane (Brian) Mahar of Albany and Michele (Mark) Morrill of Saratoga Springs; grandchildren Shane, Philip, John and Alexander Carlson, and Tyler Morrill and Abigail Mahar; brothers Melvin Carlson and Gerald Carlson; sisters Marlene Gray and Karen Mellors; and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his infant daughter, Julia; his sister, Virginia Shaw; and his beloved Bichon, Kipper. Carlson's generous spirit continues to touch lives. It was his wish to donate his body to the University of Buffalo in the interest of educating future medical professionals. He proudly displayed his confirmation letter and "Greatest Teacher" pin, which he received from the university. A private celebration of Carlson's life will be held at a later date. The family would like to express their sincere gratitude to the caring and professional staff at Olean General Hospital and Absolute Care.Memorials may be made in his memory to the Salamanca Rail Museum, 170 Main St., Salamanca, N.Y. 14779 or to an animal shelter of the donor's choice.
