SALAMANCA - Kenneth "Ken" Clifford Carlson, 81, of Salamanca, passed away Friday (Aug. 10, 2012) at Olean General Hospital. His wife of 61 years, Barbara, was at his side. He was born Sept. 6, 1930, in Smethport, Pa., a son of the late Algot and Vera Patterson Carlson. Ken graduated from Bradford Area High School in 1949 and served in the U.S. Navy for four years. On July 6, 1951, he married his high school sweetheart, Barbara Balon. He spent 38 years working as an operator on the B&O Railroad until his retirement in 1991.Ken's many hobbies included hunting, fishing, square dancing, gardening, camping and caring for his pets. He found great joy in chaperoning and assisting with the Salamanca Marching Band and Winter Color Guard from 1979 through 1985. He had a generous spirit and never hesitated to help his neighbors in caring for their lawns, snowblowing their driveways and repairing their lawn equipment. After retirement, he organized luncheons for the local railroad retirees, where he enjoyed sharing stories of past railroading. Ken was a devoted fan of the Buffalo Bills and New York Yankees. He had a deep love for his six grandchildren and will be remembered as a fun and caring grandfather.Ken is survived by his wife, Barbara; a son, Stan Carlson of Salamanca; four daughters, Robin Carlson of Ellicottville, Laura (Ron) Steele of Charlotte, N.C., Diane (Brian) Mahar of Albany and Michele (Mark) Morrill of Saratoga Springs; six grandchildren, Shane, Philip, John and Alexander Carlson, Tyler Morrill and Abigail Mahar; two brothers, Melvin Carlson and Gerald Carlson; two sisters, Marlene Gray and Karen Mellors; and many nieces and nephews.He was predeceased by his infant daughter, Julia; and his sister, Virginia Shaw.He had a beloved bichon, Kipper. Ken's generous spirit continues to touch lives. It was his wish to donate his body to the University of Buffalo in the interest of educating future medical professionals. He proudly displayed his confirmation letter and "Greatest Teacher" pin, which he received from the university. A private celebration of Ken's life will be held at a later date.The family would like to express its sincere gratitude to the caring and professional staff at Olean General Hospital and Absolute Care.Memorials can be made to the Salamanca Rail Museum, 170 Main St., Salamanca, NY 14779; or to an animal shelter in the donor's area.
