Josephine A. "Jo" Thomas, age 80, of Springfield, Mo., passed away at 9:14 p.m. Monday, June 11, 2007, in Cox South Hospital, Springfield, Mo. She was born August 10, 1926, to Elias and Mary (Farris) George in Cleveland, Ohio. She completed her education at St. Mary's Catholic School in Cleveland. Upon graduation she went to work in the family grocery business. After the conclusion of World War II, she married the love of her life, Peter J. Thomas, on June 17, 1946, a marriage that lasted nearly 61 years until Pete's passing on May 9, 2007. Together they owned and operated P.J. Thomas Grocery at 1005 College Street, Springfield, Mo., from 1947 until 1969 after which she continued to make a loving home for her family. Jo was a loving, caring people-person whose affectionate ways were borne out in the way she treated all others from the way she helped raise her younger siblings to the way she raised her own children to the way she treated all her family, all her friends as well as everyone she met, no matter how she was feeling at the time. This world has lost the sweetest of sweethearts. Jo is survived by two sons, George of Golden, Colo., and David of Springfield, Mo.; and one daughter, Joyce, of Springfield; along with a brother, Sam of Hillsboro, Ore.; and a sister, Evelyn of Prescott Valley, Ariz. The funeral Mass will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, June 15, 2007, in Immaculate Conception Catholic Church with the Rev. Lewis Hejna, celebrant. Prayer service begins at 7 p.m. this evening, June 14, 2007, in Gorman-Scharpf Brentwood Chapel, followed by a visitation.
