Joe Whitman, 90, beloved husband of Mary Whitman, went to be with the Lord on Tuesday, Aug. 15, 2006.Mr. Whitman was retired from J.P. Stevens-Slater Plant.Surviving Mr. Whitman, in addition to his wife of 71 years, are two sons, W. Gilbert Whitman and his wife, Shirley, of Marietta, J. Eddie Whitman and his wife, Beverly, of Pickens; five daughters, Mary Jane Bridges and her husband, Henry, of Sumter, Kathy Clardy and her husband, Alan, of Lenoir City, Tenn., Judy McCarson and her husband, Kenny, of Travelers Rest, Jean Wilson of Travelers Rest, and Carol Pruitt and her husband, Larry, of Greenville; 12 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; and 14 great-great-grandchildren.Mr. Whitman was preceeded in death by a daughter, Patsy Henderson; and son, Robert Anthony Whitman.The family will receive friends this evening from 6 to 8 at Johnson Funeral Home, Travelers Rest. Graveside service will be held on Thursday, Aug. 17, 2006, at 11 a.m. at Peter's Creek Baptist Church Cemetery, conducted by the Rev. Hal Parris and grandson Ron Bridges. Pallbearers will be grandsons.In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to St. Francis Hospice
