Joseph Oley Nichols NiskayunaJoseph Oley Nichols, 61, of Niskayuna, NY passed away on Sunday, November 25, 2012, at Ellis Hospital in Schenectady after a long illness. Born in Syracuse, NY on January 17, 1951, he was the son of the late Francis and Helen (nee: Oley) Nichols. Joseph graduated from St. Gregory's in Shawnee, OK and attended John Fisher College in Rochester, NY. He received his master's degree from Maxwell School of Public Administration at Syracuse University, and his Doctorate in Sacred Theology from Catholic University in Washington, D.C. He was employed as the regional health care administrator with the NYS Dept. of Health for nearly 35 years. Joseph was a man of very deep faith. During his long and courageous battle with lung cancer he found solace in his Roman Catholic faith. He was a former member of the American Guild of Organists and was an accomplished organist. Joe brought great humor and joy to those who he met on his life's journey. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his brother, James Nichols. Survivors include his wife, Phyllis (nee: Tryon) Nichols; his two children, Nathaniel Joseph Nichols, MS of Niskayuna and Janice (Jay) Tiedeck of Beckley, WV; and two granddaughters, Eleanor Hope and Lillian Grace Tiedeck. Funeral services will be on Thursday, 11:15 a.m. at Light's Funeral Home, 1428 State St., Schenectady, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial to be celebrated at 12 noon at St. Luke's Roman Catholic Church, 1241 State St., Schenectady. The family will receive relatives and friends on Wednesday from 5 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home. The family would like to thank the dedicated staff in the ICU and emergency departments at Ellis Hospital and the staff at Dr. Thomas Goodman's office for their compassion and care of Joseph during his illness.
