John Thomas Payneof Dracut, active in local sports, Army Vet; 75 DRACUT, MA -- John Thomas Payne (Tom), of Dracut, died unexpectedly, Tuesday, November 27th, 2012. He was the beloved husband of Mary Gayle Payne, with whom he shared 28 wonderful years.Tom was born in Westford, MA on March 13, 1937, son of the late Stephanie (Tousignant) and James Payne. He was a graduate of Chelmsford High School Class of 1954. He then served his country in the U.S. Army until being honorably discharged.For 20 years, Tom worked as a driver for UPS, and remained working as part of the Teamsters Union for various trucking companies.Throughout his life, he was involved in sports from his days at Chelmsford High, playing ball in Germany while serving in the US Army, drafted by the Kansas City Athletics, playing with his local baseball/softball teams, and in later years coaching in a men's modified softball league. He enjoyed his weekly bowling and pool games with his retired local teamsters, as well as in leagues at Park Place Lanes, and he ran three miles every day for most of his life.Along with his wife, Mary Gayle, Tom is survived and will be deeply missed by his daughter, Andrea Scott and her husband Richard of Dracut; his brother, James Payne and his wife Joyce of Indiana; and his two cherished grandchildren, Britton and Kellin Scott; as well as many other relatives and close friends.PAYNE -- Relatives and friends are invited to pay their respects from 1-3 p.m. on Saturday, December 1st at the DRACUT FUNERAL HOME, 2159 Lakeview Ave., DRACUT. A funeral service will be held at3 p.m. at the Funeral Home.
