Avis de décès de John-Patrick Haley

John Patrick Haley, 94 WINDHAM -- John Haley, 94, of Windham, passed away peacefully on March 19, 2013, at Gorham House in Gorham. He was born in New Brunswick, N.J., on Jan. 4, 1919. He and his large Irish family resided in New Brunswick in his early years, where he attended Sacred Heart School and St. Peter's High School. He enlisted in the Infantry in World War II and proudly served as a platoon Sergeant and machine gunner in Germany, Belgium and France. His courage and leadership under fire earned him a Bronze Star medal. After the war, he was employed by E.R. Squibb and Sons Pharmaceuticals in New Brunswick, where he worked as a process operator in the fermentation department making penicillin. This is where he met the love of his life, his wife Olga. John and Olga married in 1950 and built a home in Edison, New Jersey, where they lived for over 30 years and raised their daughter, Linda. Upon retiring from Squibb after more than 30 years of service, John and Olga moved to Windham to be closer to their daughter who moved to Maine in 1985. In his later years, he enjoyed his morning coffee gatherings at McDonald's in Windham, where he would debate political issues with friends. He was a staunch democrat and had no trouble speaking his mind. John enjoyed working on his lawn and garden. He always had the neatest property and greenest grass in the neighborhood. He also liked spending time with his woodworking hobby. John was recognized around Windham for his love of exercise. He rode his bike two to five miles almost every day right up to the ripe old age of 85. John was a loving husband, good neighbor, and a wonderful father. He will be missed dearly by his family and friends. John is survived by his wife Olga; his daughter Linda; his son-in-law Andrew Pal; and nieces and nephews in New Jersey and California. Visiting hours will be held from 1-3 p.m. on Sunday, March 24, 2013, at the Dolby Funeral Chapel, 434 River Rd., in Windham. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 a.m. on Monday, March 25, 2013, at Our Lady of Perpetual Help, 919 Roosevelt Trail, Windham. Burial will follow at Brooklawn Memorial Park, 2002 Congress St., Portland. A reception in John's honor will be held after the burial at Gorham House, 50 New Portland Rd., Gorham.
