John M. Whalen 1958 - 2013 SOUTH HADLEY - John M. "Jay" Whalen, age 55, of South Hadley, passed away on Saturday, July 20, 2013. He was born in Holyoke, and graduated from Holyoke Trade School. Jay served in the United States Army, and later was a twenty year Police Officer and Detective for the City of Holyoke. He enjoyed hiking through the Appalachian Trail and made frequent trips to Mount Washington in New Hampshire. He loved to travel with his only daughter, Chandra, throughout China and the United States. Together they enjoyed long drives on Route 47 and conversations into the late night. Jay was predeceased by his parents, Thomas J. and Gail (Marion) Moynahan, and a brother, Michael Moynahan. He is survived by a daughter, Chandra Whalen Esq. of New York; two brothers: Anthony "Tony" Whalen and David Whalen and his wife Tracey, all of Holyoke; his nieces and nephew, and many dear friends. Relatives and friends are invited to attend Jay's Memorial Service to be held on Friday July 26 at 10:00 a.m. in Sacred Heart Church of Our Lady of Guadalupe Parish, 435 Maple Street, Holyoke. Burial will be at the convenience of his family. There are no calling hours. Barry J. Farrell Funeral Home is handling arrangements. In lieu of flowers, donations are requested to Jericho Kids Camp, PO Box 1039, Holyoke MA 01041.
