NEW YORK CITY, N.Y. - John J. Ferry, Jr., lawyer and retired navy captain, dies at age 62. Mr. Ferry died in Manhattan, N.Y. on Thursday, March 3, 2011. The cause of death was a brain tumor.A 1970 graduate of Holy Cross, Captain Ferry was commissioned a Naval Officer. Captain Ferry served his country honorably for 30 years both as an active duty and reserve Officer. While on active duty, Captain Ferry served as a tactical jet flight instructor. Subsequently, he was selected among the Navy's first aviators to pilot the Navy's then newest fighter aircraft, the F-14 Tomcat. Call sign "Flash", Captain Ferry was assigned to the VF-14 Tophatters Squadron aboard the USS John F. Kennedy (CV-67) making numerous deployments.As a Reserve Officer, Captain Ferry served in key duty assignments in support of the fleet including Commanding Officer USS JFK (CV-67), Oceanographic Command, and Naval Air Stations Rota, Spain and South Weymouth, Mass. Captain Ferry retired in 2000. Proud to serve his country, Captain Ferry took President Kennedy's declaration to heart: "Any man who may be asked in the century what he did to make his life worthwhile, I think can respond with a good deal of pride and satisfaction, I served in the United States Navy."As an attorney, Mr. Ferry practiced law in Massachusetts for 30 years. He served as an IRS Tax Attorney and subsequently opened his own law practice in 1989, concentrating in estate and tax planning. Mr. Ferry earned a Masters of Law degree in taxation and designation as a Certified Financial Planner. In 2002 Mr. Ferry was named by Martindale-Hubbell as preeminent in his field of law.Mr. Ferry is survived by his beloved wife of 39 years, Marianne Elisabeth (Tellier) Ferry, of Manhattan, N.Y.; son, Patrick Michael, of Manhattan, N.Y., and son, John Andrew; daughter-in-law, Irina; and grandchildren, Nina, Isabella, and Justin Andrew, all of Cape Town, South Africa. In addition he is survived by his sister, Sheila, and her husband, Angelo; two brothers, Michael and James; a nephew, Andrew; and a niece, Angela and her husband, Joseph, all of Connecticut.A memorial service will be held to celebrate John's life at 11 a.m., Saturday, March 19, at St. John the Baptist Church, 17 Chestnut St., Peabody, Mass.
