Saunders, Sr., a native of Sopchoppy, Florida, and a long-time resident of Jay, Florida, passed away May 6, 2012. He was born on August 6, 1923, to William Thomas and Mattie Trice Sanders. J.D. was preceded in death by his wife of fifty-two years, Leola, his son David, his brother, W.T., and his parents.He is survived by his daughter, Paula, of Pensacola, his son Lagran (Ben) and grandson, Maclean, of Tallahassee, and his loving companion Pearl Wilson. Also surviving him are his sisters, Anita S. Townsend of Crawfordville and Juanita S. Roddenberry of Sopchoppy, as well as their families. He was a proud Marine, a Purple Heart decorated veteran of the Pacific Theater in WWII.J.D. started his working life building roads with Smith Construction in Pensacola and then moved to Container Corporation in Brewton, Alabama, where he retired after 28 years. His love of the outdoors, hunting and fishing, was only surpassed by his devotion to his family and friends. J.D.'s charm, wit, and stories of life will be remembered -- he will be missed by all, including his last favorite dachshund Woody. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, May 12, 2012, at 11:00 a.m. (EDT) at Bevis Funeral Home, Harvey Young Chapel in Crawfordville.Bevis Funeral Home, Harvey-Young Chapel, Crawfordville, FL is in charge of arrangements.
