WILLIAMSON Joan Marie Williamson, age 74, wife of Bernard Williamson of Derby, with her family by her bedside Joan lost a terrible fight with cancer, and she passed away peacefully on Friday June 25, 2010 in CT Hospice of Branford. Diagnosed in March 2010, Joan never faltered in her role as wife and mother, placing the needs of her family above her own. Joan was born in Derby on November 8, 1935 and was the daughter of the late Ivan and Lillian McGarr Cable. She has left this world too soon, leaving behind a wonderful husband of 52 years, Bernard and three sons, Glenn and his wife Julie of Columbus NE, Her Special son Terry of Derby and Lee and his wife Betsy also of Derby. She also leaves behind six grandchildren, Glenn Jr, Garrick, Trista and Ocean all of Columbus, NE and Chelsea and Kaleigh of Charleston, SC. She is survived by a sister Catherine Cable Kelleher and husband Jack, a sister-in-law Lois Williamson (Sister Michael Marie C.S.C) and many nieces, nephews, cousins. A lifelong resident of Derby, Joan graduated Derby High School in 1954. She started her work career at the Birmingham National Bank in Derby. She took time out in 1963 to devote her time, effort and love to her family and the rearing of her boys. She re-entered the work as a clerk in the Derby City Hall. She ran for City Clerk and was elected by sizable margins to four terms. Many Derby Mayors referred to Joan as the Unofficial Mayor of Derby in recognition of her professional ability and knowledge. She retired in 2007 and continued to work in a part time capacity. A parishioner of St. Marys Church in Derby, Joan was also was a member of the Ladies Guild. Joan's passions in addition to her family were travel, cruises and trips to the Mohegan Casino. Friends may greet the family at the Edward F. Adzima Funeral Home, 253 Elizabeth Street, Derby, on Monday from 4 to 8 p.m. On Tuesday, friends are invited to attend a Mass of Christian Burial at 10 a.m. directly at St. Marys Church, 212 Elizabeth Street, Derby. Burial will follow in Mt. St. Peters Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial donations be made to Connecticut Hospice, 100 Double Beach Rd.
