They then farmed starting with chickens and selling eggs and soon got into the apiary business as a side line. In the 1990s, she entered over 100 entries in the arts and crafts, baked goods, preserves, flowers, plants and pony sections. Her favourite hobby was crafts and she did lovely crocheting. For 13 years she donated her time at the Temiskaming Hospital with the chronic care patients. She donated her time to People Ruling Over Disabilities (PROD) . Mrs. Mackey was also a member of the March of Dimes and the Housing Commission and was a member of St. Paul’s United Church in New Liskeard. She was the first teacher of the physically disabled for four years before the Gwen School opened and supply taught at New Liskeard Public School for five years. She was also a member of the Temiskaming Pleasure Horse Club for many years. Mrs. Mackey received a Senior Achievement Award from Queen’s Park, June 1, 2004 in Toronto. She was one of the 20 recipients selected to receive the 2003 Senior Achievement Award which honours the extraordinary contributions made by seniors to their communities.
