James Paul Barnes, 69, of 1202 Old Wallace Gregg Road, died Tuesday, Nov. 12, 2002, at Regency Hospital in Florence. Graveside services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, Nov. 14, 2002, at Mount Hope Cemetery in Florence. Born Dec. 26, 1932, in Florence, he was the son of the late Hattie Thomason and Hartford Richardson Barnes. He was married for 32 years to the late Elizabeth Williamson Barnes. Mr. Barnes was a member of First Presbyterian Church. A graduate of Florence High School, Mr. Barnes was a member of the 1950 State Championship Football Team, where he was voted the Most Outstanding Player. He was a 1960 graduate of Clemson University and practiced architecture in Florence for 42 years. Mr. Barnes was a registered architect, was a registered landscape architect and was a licensed general contractor. He was the architect for numerous buildings in the area, including West Florence High School, Bruce Hospital (Carolinas Hospital Cedar Tower), Florence General Hospital, Fleet Funding Operations Center (Florence City Center), and the Florence Public Library. He was in the U.S. Army from 1951 to 1954, serving a tour of duty in Germany and the Korean Conflict. Mr. Barnes is survived by a son, James Paul Barnes Jr., of Florence; a son and daughter-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Allen Jackson Barnes, of Sumter; a granddaughter, Jane Elizabeth Barnes, of Easley; grandsons, Allen Jackson Jr., Charles Segars and James Williamson Barnes, all of Sumter; a sister, Lois Milton, of Maclenny, Fla.; and a friend, Wanwadee Larsen, of Florence. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 tonight, Nov. 13, 2002, at Waters-Powell Funeral Home; and at other times at the home. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to East End Elementary School PTO, 505 E. 2nd Ave., Easley, SC 29640; or, to Wilson Hall School, 2801 S.
