PATTERSON James Duncan Patterson, died peacefully on Thursday, March 20, 2003 in Victoria, B.C. Born May 16, 1922, in New Westminster, B.C., Jim was the first of three children raised by James Dyck and Dorothy Patterson. The family moved to Victoria and settled in Oak Bay, where Jim developed a lifelong love of ships and the sea. As a young man, he loved to sail the bays and channels of southern Vancouver Island. Educated at Oak Bay High School and University School (now St. Michael's University School), Jim served as a Flight Lieutenant in the RCAF during World War II. During the war he met and fell in love with Frances Brennan, a military nurse from Regina, Saskatchewan. Married in 1945, Jim and Fran raised four children - James, Barbara, Geoffrey and Elizabeth - and developed many lasting friendships across Canada and around the world. Jim began his civilian career with the National Film Board, exhibiting the works of Canadian filmmakers to audiences throughout British Columbia. A talented administrator, he served as NFB regional director in Vancouver until 1953 when he joined the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation. After launching CBUT in Vancouver, Jim took his passion for public broadcasting to Toronto where he became director of planning for the CBC Television network. Returning to Victoria in 1981, Jim and Fran built their dream home on Cadboro Bay. A gifted gardener, Jim stayed active withlandscaping projects and volunteer work. A year after celebrating their 50th wedding anniversary, Fran passed away and Jim devoted himself to gardening and causes that engaged his spirit. These included the MS Society, St. Michael's University School, and various charities and arts groups. In addition to his four children, Jim is survived by grandchildren Samantha, Jennifer, Matthew, James, Sean, Dayna and Dylan; and sisters Janice and Audrey. A service to celebrate Jim's life will be held in the Sands Funeral Chapel, 1803 Quadra Street, Victoria, BC on Saturday, March 29, 2003 at 1:00 p.m. Refreshments to follow in the Sands Arbor Reception Centre. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to a fund set up in Jim's name at St. Michael's University School.
