James Francis Tomney, Jim, 83 CAPE ELIZABETH -- James Francis Tomney, Jim, 83, of Cape Elizabeth died peacefully on Sept. 5, 2007, at Maine Medical Center. He was born Feb. 26, 1924, in Greenwich, Conn., the son of James Michael and Ethel Mary (Callaghan) Tomney. He was a 1941 graduate of Brunswick School and went on to receive his BS at St. Bernard's in Rochester, N.Y. in 1945. He received two Masters degrees from St. Mary's in Baltimore, Md., and was a graduate of the National Planned Giving Institute. He married Naomi Harper Shaffer on Nov. 14, 1959, in Nashua, N.H., and began to raise a family. In his career he was Director of Development and Public Relations at Beverly Hospital, Beverly, Mass., Elkhart General Hospital in Elkhart, Ind., Choste-Simms Hospital, Arlington, Mass., and Mercy Hospital, Portland. In 1988, he established a consulting company in Cape Elizabeth for Maine Non-Profit Organizations. Among many others, Tomney Associates was proud to assist the Maine College of Art, St. Mary's Hospital, Children's Museum of Maine, Maine Cancer Research & Education Foundation, Falmouth Memorial and Portland Public Libraries, Congregation Bet Ha'am, Opportunity Farm for Boys, Friends of Casco Bay, and the Trinity Episcopal Church. After retirement in 2004, he continued to assist several non-profit organizations, most recently St. Charles Borromeo Church, Brunswick. Jim was a past president of the Kiwanis Club of Beverly, Mass.; Past President of North Bay Council Boy Scouts of America; Lt. governor designate of div. 16 Boy Scouts of America and was awarded the Silver Beaver Award in 1978; a past board of director for Beverly Regional YMCA, the United Fund Central North Shore, Beverly Chamber of Commerce and the Family Life Institute. He also assisted on the North Shore Committee on Alcoholism. He was a member of the Cape Elizabeth Lions Club; and was a lifelong member of the Elks Club. Surviving are his wife Naomi of 47 years; daughters, Karen L. Droogan of Clinton, Mass., Laura S. Skolozdra of Mount Laurel, N.J.; sons, Christopher J. and his wife Allison of Fredericksburg, Va., Brian M. and his wife M. Ingrid of Sterling, Va.; and 10 grandchildren. Visiting hours will be held from 2-5 p.m. on Sunday, Sept. 9, at Conroy-Tully Crawford South Portland Chapel, 1024 Broadway, South Portland. Prayers will be recited at 9:15 a.m., Monday at the chapel, followed by a 10 a.m. concelebrated Mass of Christian Burial at St. Bartholomew's Church, 8 Two Lights Rd., Cape Elizabeth.
