James A. Dunphy 1938 - 2013 WEST SPRINGFIELD - James A. Dunphy, 74, entered into eternal rest on Wednesday morning. Born in Springfield Massachusetts, he was the son of the late Mary (Glynn) Dunphy and Edward Dunphy. He was an eight year basic education instructor at Massachusetts Career Development Institute. Prior to his employment at M.C.D.I., he was a twenty year Chi-copee teacher and worked with the local stagehands union. He was a 1956 Cathedral High graduate, and lettered in track and soccer. He played on the 1954 championship Hungry Hill Acorns football team, and played four years of C.Y.O. basketball for Holy Family parish. He played Little League baseball for Blunt Park, and in the 70's, was a Little League baseball and hockey coach in West Springfield, where he was one of the original board members of the West Springfield Hockey Association. Mr. Dunphy attended the University of Notre Dame, and was on the boxing team there. He continued with boxing while serving as a Vietnam-era veteran with the famed 101st Airborne Division. After his discharge, he graduated from Our Lady of Elms College. He was a former member of the Dante Club of West Springfield, the Agawam Revolver Club, and a current active member the Chicopee Lodge of Elks, where he ran the Elks essay contest for ten years and chaired the first "Father-Daughter" event ever held there. In 2011 he became an Elks Officer. At fifty years old, he became a fitness buff, a Harley Davidson enthusiast and participated in skydiving at Northampton Airport. He is survived by his wife Wilma (Ball) Dunphy, his four children and nine grandchildren: Michael Dunphy of Enfield, CT and his two children Tara and Michael Jr.; Christopher Dunphy and his wife Sharon of West Springfield and their children Ryan, Lindsey and John; Catherine Koulgeorge and her husband Jim of Feeding Hills and their two sons Alexander and Dwight; Patrick Dunphy and his wife Kelly of Agawam and their daughters, Megan and Mikayla. A committal service will be held Monday 10AM at the Massachusetts Veterans' Memorial Cemetery, Main Street, Agawam. Calling hours will be SUN 3-6PM at the TOOMEY-O'BRIEN FUNERAL HOME, 1043 Westfield St., W. Spfld. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to Baystate Visiting Nurse and Hospice Association, 280 Chestnut St, 6th Floor, Springfield, MA 01199. "Motorcycles Are Everywhere"
