MANCHESTER -- The First Congregational Church was filled Wednesday afternoon February 8, 2006, for the service of thanksgiving and celebration for the life of J. Edward “Ed” Sargent.Officiating was the Rev. Dr. Steven E. Berry, senior minister, and the Rev. Matthew W. Laney, associate minister. Music was under the direction of organist Linda Hueckel, who led the congregation in the singing of the hymns “Precious Lord, Take My Hand” and “Amazing Grace.” The hymn “How Great Thou Art” was sung by soloist Mark Madison.Norma Will led the congregation reciting Psalm 23 in unison. The Rev. Berry offered the scripture readings and the homily. Reflections on Ed’s life were offered by Ryan Mone, Donald Goodell and Ed Griffith. A special musical selection, “Where Eagles Fly,” was performed by the remaining members of the Ed Sargent and the Country Generals Band with Mark Madison singing lead vocal. Among the delegations present were representatives from Central Vermont Public Service Corp. and the Fraternal Order of Eagles, Manchester. All those in attendance were invited to an open house following the service at the Fraternal Order of Eagles.Serving as pallbearers were John Sargent Jr., Brook, Ryan, Damon and Blair Mone and Tom Zoufaly.Interment will be in the spring in the family lot in Danby-Scottsville Cemetery.J. Edward “Ed” Sargent, a longtime resident of Vermont and recently of Granville, N.Y., died Feb. 2, 2006, at the Centers For Living and Rehabilitation in Bennington following a lengthy battle with cancer.Arrangements were under the care of Brewster Funeral Service 34 Park Place.
