THOMAS, Lillian "Irene"October 10, 1927 – Calgary, ABApril 13, 2014 – Calgary, ABSadly, we say goodbye to a wonderful mom, grandmother, wife, sister, and friend. Irene passed away in the arms of her family after a long struggle with Alzheimer's. Irene was born and raised in Calgary, graduated from Western Canada High School, and went on to work for Canada Employment Services in the tax department. She met the love of her life in Banff and married in 1952. They lived in Calgary where they started their family, moved to Edmonton, then Winnipeg, and back to Calgary expanding their family along the way. Irene devoted her life to raising her five children and then returned to work in the library at St, Francis High School and retired in 1986. Irene was an active member of the CWL, Inn From the Cold, St. Vincent de Paul and never missed an opportunity to volunteer her time to helping others in need. She loved to spend time at her family cabin on Lake Lillian where many fond memories were created, and in later years, spent the winters in Phoenix. Irene is survived by her loving and devoted husband Clifford; sons, Brett, Craig (Debbie) and Cliff; and her daughters Karen and Lisa (Steve); brother-in-law Don Nicholson; and eight wonderful grandchildren, Jennifer, Theresa, Jeremy, Michael, Sarah, Joshua, Justin, and Devon. She also leaves behind numerous nieces and nephews and her beloved Yorkshire Terrier, Cricket who was steadfast by her side right until the end. She was predeceased by her brother Eric (Betty) and sister Mary. A Funeral Mass will be Celebrated at St. Patrick's Catholic Church (1414 Shawnessy Boulevard S.W.) on Monday, April 21, 2014 at 11:00 a.m. Forward condolences through www.mcinnisandholloway.com. If friends so desire, memorial donations may be made to the Father Lacombe Care Centre, 332 - 146 Avenue S.E., Calgary, AB T2X 2A3. The family would like to recognize the wonderful support, compassion, and care given to Irene, her family, and Cricket at Father Lacombe Care Centre. In living memory of Irene Thomas, a tree will be planted at Fish Creek Provincial Park.
