KITTERY, Maine — Hilda Emma Thomas, 98 years old, died May 9, 2012 at The Edgewood Centre in Portsmouth, N.H.Hilda was born in Kittery and lived there for 95 years, more recently resided at The Edgewood Centre. She was born on Oct. 6, 1913 to Grace and George Thomas. Hilda attended Kittery schools and then began work at The Kittery Family Laundry. From there she began working at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard, where she retired after 30 years of service. After retiring, Hilda then worked as a housekeeper at Portsmouth Hospital, York Hospital and The Homestead in Kittery. She was a proud member of The Kittery Historical Society. Although, Hilda was never married, she enjoyed the benefits of being an aunt, great aunt and great-great aunt. She was greatly loved by her large, extended family.Hilda was predeceased by her siblings, her brothers, Willis, Paul and Lester Thomas; and her sisters, Helen Cutten Goss, Marguerite Goodnough, Evelyn Deady and Mildred Leary.Hilda will be remembered for her sharp wit and wonderful sense of humor. She had the ability to make you smile, laugh and blush. Hilda loved Kittery and could keep you entertained for hours with her stories of the old days around town. She made many remarkable friendships in her three years at The Edgewood Centre and lasting friendships throughout her lifetime. Hilda loved to travel and attended the New York's World Fair in 1939. She has visited Washington D.C., Virginia and Canada. Hilda especially loved her many trips to the White Mountains over the years. A period of visitation for Hilda will be held Thursday, May 17, 2012 from 6 to 8 p.m. at the J.S. Pelkey Funeral Home, 125 Old Post Road, Kittery, Maine; where funeral services will be held on Friday, May 18, 2012 at 11 a.m. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Hilda's memory to Footprints Food Pantry, P.O.
