Kling, Herbert R. ROTTERDAM, N.Y. Herbert R. Kling 95, of Shirlwood Dr., Schenectady, formerly of Fonda and a winter residence in Wauchu-la, Fla. passed away Sunday evening, July 12, 2009 at his home in Rotterdam with his loving family at his side. Born May 10, 1914 in Sharon Springs, N.Y., he was the son of the late William Morrell Kling and Lillian Fraats Kling. He was also predeceased by a sister, Helen (Maisie) Fraats Phillips; brothers, William Collingwood Kling and John Luther Kling and a grandson, Stuart Carpenter. Married January 1, 1944 to Eleanor Butts of Martinsburg, W.Va.; widowed January 2, 1991. He is survived by daughter, Helen (Wayne) Carpenter, eight grandchildren, Michelle (Jeffrey) Barnett, Nicole (Ed) Saczawa, Robert (Laurie) Carpenter, Stephanie (Bill) Hanrahan, Theresa Carpenter, Joseph Carpenter, Julia Carpenter and Thomas Carpenter; eight great-grandchildren, Ben Barnett, Freedom and Faith Gamache, Alexa and Sheila Carpenter, Cole Saczawa, Robert James and Alexander Carpenter. He married February 14, 1993 to Mildred Brajkovich Alessi. Two daughters, Tina Prewitt and Tami (James) Cole, four grandchildren, Morgan Williams, Ahndreahna Prewitt, Elizabeth and J. Bryan Cole. He is also survived by many nieces, nephews and cousins. Graduated from Sharon Springs Central School in 1932 and from Cornell University in 1936. Completed a general agricultural course at the College of Agriculture, returned to do graduate work for a master's degree which was earned in farm management and statistics in 1938 and also serving as a graduate assistant in agricultural economics department, awarded tuition scholarship and started working for his Ph. D, left for practical experience. Member of Phi Kappa Phi, honorary scholastic fraternity, TKE fraternity brother and graduated in upper five percent of his class at Cornell. Cornell University remained dear to his heart. As such, he received many accolades for his ongoing support of the university. Herbert maintained interest in the dairy industry throughout his lifetime, serving in many jobs pertaining to the industry. He was employed at the Interstate Milk Producers' Cooperative as an economist prior to enlisting in the Army in November 1942. He served in military intelligence until April 29, 1946, during World War II with an honorable discharge as a master sergeant. He returned to the Interstate Cooperative in 1946 and on March 1, 1947 commenced employment with the department of agriculture and markets, New York State, as a senior statistician, then senior research analyst. Appointed director of milk control on July 16, 1958, in May 1974 his position was renamed director of dairy industry services, and retired from department on May 31, 1983. Employed by Senator L.S. Riford, Jr., Chairman of the NYS Senate Agriculture Committee on July 1, 1983. On retirement of Senator Riford, he transferred to the Legislative Commission on dairy industry development in 1986, of which Senator John M. McHugh was chairman, he retired April 1, 1995. Herbert was a co-author of the Dairy Compact Legislation. Subsequently the Northeast Interstate Dairy Compact became effective by the state legislatures in each state and Congressional approval, July 1997. Appointed to board of directors, Central National Bank, Canajoharie, N.Y. in January 1961. He retired from the position in May 1991. Herbert was also appointed a trustee at FMCC 1978-1988, by the governor. Family will receive relatives and friends Wednesday, July 15, 2009, from 4 to 8 p.m. at the Bond Funeral Home, 1614 Guilderland Avenue, Schenectady, N.Y. A graveside service will be private at Evergreen Cemetery, Fonda, N.Y. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in Herbert's memory to a charity of one's choice.
