PERHAM - Henry J. Nutting, 95, passed away Sunday, Feb. 12, 2012, at his residence. He was born Aug. 14, 1916, in Perham, the son of Ernest and Florence Nutting. Henry was the grandson of James Nutting, who founded the farm in 1861. Henry lived his entire life in the homestead house, which was built in 1879. He married Ethel Anderson Nov. 9, 1935. Henry was a young man when he took over the farm from his father. After years of struggling to make a profit with potatoes and other crops, Henry and his wife, Ethel, converted the farm to producing eggs. They started small but when Henry retired in the 1980s, his eggs were known throughout Aroostook County. After Henry and Ethel retired, they spent many happy days in their converted van camping all over the country and into New Brunswick. Henry fulfilled a lifelong dream when the couple drove all the way to Alaska in that van. He was also a ham radio enthusiast and his KA1IWX call is well known in this part of the country. He had a vegetable garden and relished treating his church family to a corn roast every fall. Henry was a longtime and devoted member of Dunntown Advent Christian Church. He served as a deacon and elder of the church, a position that reflects his many years of living his faith and being a good neighbor. He served as a selectman for many years at the town of Perham. Henry received the Perham cane from the community for being the oldest resident. In 2004 at the Washburn August Fest, Henry and Ethel were honored to be The King and Queen. He is survived by a daughter, Joyce Barker of Perham; five grandchildren and their spouses, Carol and John Blackstone, Bruce and Karen Barker, Brett Barker and his fiancee, Candace, Debra and Mark Getty, Scott and Rebekah Barker, 10 great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by his wife, Ethel, in April 2010; and a sister, Ruth Drost. Relatives and friends may call 7-9 p.m. Thursday at Dunntown Advent Christian Church, where funeral services will be held 1 p.m. Friday, Feb. 17, with the Rev. George McLaughlin officiating. Spring interment will be at Fairview Cemetery, Perham. Those who wish may donate in his memory to Dunntown Advent Christian Church, 20 North Wade Road, Wade, ME 04786.
