Helen J. Wayland Helen Wayland Having had a long and wonderful life, Helen Rose (Jeffrey) Wayland, 98, went to her rest on July 18, 2011 at the Kaplan Family Hospice in Danvers, MA, following a hospitalization of about a month. She had resided at her home at 20 Federal St., Unit 5, Salem, MA with her son Jeffrey Curtis Wayland. Helen had turned 98 about a week prior to her hospitalization. She had celebrated her birthday with a museum outing with her son, which she enjoyed immensely. Helen was originally from Long Island, NY, where she grew up and lived about half her life, before moving with her husband and children to Boxford, MA in 1965. The eldest of the two daughters of Henry Thomas Jeffrey and Madeline (Rose) Jeffrey, she was born June 10, 1913 in the town of Jamaica on Long Island, but grew up and lived primarily in Bay Shore, Long Island until the 1965 move to Massachusetts. She was educated in the Bay Shore, NY schools and Packer Collegiate Institute in Brooklyn, NY, and completed her freshman year at Wheaton College in Norton, MA, after which the depression and her parents? financial situation made it impossible for her to continue her education. On December 2, 1939 Helen married Emery Brewster (Bruce) Wayland, who shared her June 10 birthday. They shared 49 years of marriage, before Bruce passed away on December 15, 1988 at the age of 87. Together they had a daughter Judith Wayland, late of Wolfeboro, NH, who passed away in October of 1999, and son Jeffrey Curtis Wayland of Salem, MA, who survives Helen. After leaving college Helen spent several years working in fashion retail at Lord & Taylors in New York City. At various times in her life she was employed as a librarian, and in other capacities. All her life she was, above all, an ardent volunteer. She was a leader of the local USO during World War II. She was a leader in the Topsfield-Boxford Community Club, in which association she was instrumental in advancing the cause of the Visiting Nurse Association. She was a leader in the Garden Club. The list goes on. She loved people, and people loved her. In addition to her husband and daughter, Helen was pre-deceased by her sister Margaret Young, her niece Leslie (Young) Wade, her cousin Pauline (Maynard) Kane, and her cousin Sidney Norton and his siblings. In addition to her son, she is survived by her brother-in-law George J. Young, her nieces and their families, her cousins John Maynard and Nancy (Maynard) Swan and their families, and the families of her late cousins. ARRANGEMENTS: There will be a memorial service celebrating Helen's life, to be held on Saturday, September 10, 2011 at 2:00PM at Trinity Episcopal Church, 124 River Rd., Topsfield, MA 01983. All those who knew and loved Helen, or were touched by her life, are asked to attend. In lieu of flowers, donations to the VNA Care Network and Hospice, 5 Federal St., Danvers, MA 01923 are encouraged. |
