August 14, 2004 George E. Abbott, 79, of Eastham, MA, formerly of Syracuse, died August 14 at Cape Cod Hospital from complications due to pancreatic cancer. He was married to Rosemary J. Abbott for 58 years. They moved from Syracuse to Eastham in 1974. Mr. Abbott was a longtime advocate of historical preservation and had been an active civic leader in Eastham for more than 20 years. He was born in Salem, MA, attended Salem schools and graduated from Dean Academy, Franklin, MA, and Syracuse University. Mr. Abbott was very proud of his World War II military service as an Army combat engineer in the European Theater, receiving a commendation and Purple Heart for injuries received when his combat unit landed with Allied forces at Utah Beach on D-Day, 1944. He remained in the Army National Guard for almost 30 years, retiring as a chief warrant officer. Mr. Abbott worked for the National Guard in Syracuse before becoming administrative assistant to the dean in the SU School of Engineering. He later became SU's Director of Career Services. Upon his move to Cape Cod, he began a second career working for the Commonwealth of Massachusetts Department Of Education and Training. He retired at age 70 in 1995. He was active in the Unitarian Church his entire life and was president of the congregation at May Memorial Unitarian Society when the present church was proposed and constructed on East Genesee Street. Surviving in addition to his wife is one daughter, Deborah J. Abbott and her partner, William R. Smith of Eastham; two sons, James F. Abbott and his partner, Victoria Vaughn of Santa Cruz, CA, and George E. Abbott Jr. and his wife Susan of New Brighton, MN; one brother, William F. Abbott of Westport, CT; two grandchildren, Kieran Abbott of New Brighton and Nickolas Abbott of Santa Cruz; and a niece and nephew of Westport, CT. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Nauset Light Preservation Society, PO Box 94, Eastham, MA 02642 or the Eastham Historical Society's Schoolhouse Museum building project, PO Box 8, Eastham, MA 02642. A memorial service will be held September 18 at the Chapel in the Pines (Unitarian), Eastham, MA. Arrangements are by the Dyer-Lake Funeral Home, North Attleboro, MA.
