Genevieve J. Thomas Genevieve Josephine Wheeler Thomas, 92, who retired as a professor at Florida A&M University, died Sunday, Dec. 24, 2006. The service will be at 1 p.m. EST Saturday at St. Michaels and All angels Episcopal Church, with burial at Tallahassee Memory Gardens. Delta Sigma will hold an Omega Service at noon at the church.In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Big Bend Hospice, 1723 Mahan Center Blvd., Tallahassee, FL 32308 or to Friends of FAMU Libraries, 315 Coleman Library, Tallahassee, FL 32307-4700 or to St. Michaels and All angels Episcopal Church, 1405 Melvin Street Tallahassee, FL 32301. Strong and Jones Funeral Hom e (850-224-2139) is handling arrangements.Her professional career spanned 36 years in which time she served as a classroom instructor, dean of the School of Home Economics and concluded her tenure in 1977, having returned to classroom instruction. Numerous innovations occurred during her administration, including the construction and furnishing of a new home-economics annex in the Perry-Paige Agriculture and Home Economics Building.She was a member of St. Michael and All Angels Episcopal Church, Church Women United, Tallahassee Alumnae Chapter Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Inc., the Spelman College Alumni Association and the FAMU Retirees Club. She is survived by Dr. Flossie M. Byrd, a devoted former student and friend; her goddaughter, H. Alexis R. McMillan; a godson, Christopher Brown; three cousins, Dr. Charles S. Finch (and Ellen) of Atlanta, Mrs. Helen Mandeville of Albuqurque, N.M. and Johnny Williams of Atlanta; a caregiver for her late brother, Edwin F.W. Driskell; her adopted family, Clinton F. Byrd (and Beverly) of Tallahassee and the Byrds of Monticello; Beverly Barrington of Tallahassee; George Barber of Tallahassee; Eddrolla Ann Davis of Tallahassee; Agnes "Aggie" Baity of Tallahassee; her St. Michael family; the Spelman sisters; her Delta sorors; former students, Dr. Dolores Lefall of Fort Pierce; retired Colonel Clara Miller of Novato, Calif.; Mrs. Sallie Fletcher Reed of Philadelphia and many other friends.In 1955, she married J. Luther Thomas, director, FAMU library, who preceded her in death in 1975.
