Gladys was born on September 27, 1916 in Union City, Ohio to George Franklin Stonerock and Viola Grace Harper. At the age of 2, her family moved to Dayton, Ohio where she attended Kindergarten, 1st and 2nd grades. At that time, their family doctor told the family they had to move to another climate as her father could not withstand another Ohio winter. On September 27, 1924, the family arrived at Longwood, FL., by train and the family lived there 21 years. These were the depression years. For two summers Gladys and her brother, Robert road their bicycles to Orlando (12 miles) each week for the family's groceries. The bikes had boxes attached to the handle bars of each bike. They were allowed money for one cold drink before they started back home. Gladys was a volunteer at ages 16 and 17 with her church for a devotional and program on Sunday afternoons at the Sanford Elderly Folks Home. At Lyman School she participated in plays, the Debate Team, Basketball Team, Spelling Bee, and played piano in the school orchestra. At church she played piano for each service for seven years, was a Better Speaking Contact for the Baptist District, worked in the school library after school and picked up and took to Sunday School Children whose parents did not attend church. On November 25, 1936, she married Waldo Waters. In 1942 Waldo was drafted into the Army Air Corps. Gladys went along working where troop carrier boats were built, in New Orleans, then to Eagle Pass Army Air field. She did her war effort there. After the war, the family moved to Bartow where Gladys continued to be a designated driver and was home room chairman for each son every other year they were there. Gladys was head of the Beginner department, 4 years, helped with Vacation Bible schools and other programs. The family moved to Daytona Beach in 1960, and in December, 1969 her husband died. Gladys retired from GE after 15 years, and then traveled extensively for many years. She was a member of the Rebekah Class at Riverbend Community Church in Ormond Beach and has been a volunteer at nursing homes until she was 91 years old. Her life was spent helping others. Gladys is survived by two sons, Jack Waters of Tallahassee, Richard (Karen) of Daytona Beach Shores; granddaughters, Traci (James) Bruggeman, of Texas, their children Julie and Josh, and Kimberly McLaughlin and son, Hunter of Daytona Beach. Also surviving family members are Dr. Bob Stonerock (Marti), daughter Chelsea of Orlando and Dr. Sue Stonerock Lutz, FL. In lieu of flowers, donations to Halifax Health Hospice of Volusia/Flagler County, 3800 Woodbriar Trial, Port Orange, FL 32129 is appreciated.
