Pat West dies at 85; Francis Patrick West, known as Pat to his family and friends, died peacefully after a courageous battle with cancer at Glendale Nursing Home on December 31, 2008. He was born in Syracuse, NY and grew up in Erie, PA. He graduated from Cathedral Preparatory School and attended Gannon University in Erie, PA. Pat was a sergeant in the U.S. Army and served our country in WWII in Europe. Pat and his wife, Mary Eileen Donahue West, moved to Schenectady in 1956. He was employed by the American Sterilizer Hospital Supply Company and the U.S. Postal Service, from which he retired in 1985. He is survived by his nine children, Thomas (Stephanie) and Margaret of Schenectady, Martha Dillon and Anne of Albany, Gerald (Susan) of St. Charles, IL, William of Orlando, FL, Mary of San Jose, CA, Robert (Carlene) of West Chester, PA and Maureen of Winter Park, FL; and eight grandchildren, Monica and Lauren of New York City, Adrienne of Chicago, Alexander of Schenectady, Amanda, Leigh Ann and Kelly of West Chester, PA and Samantha Dillon of Albany. He was predeceased by his wife and mother of their nine children, Mary Eileen; and his second wife, Jean Schutt, whom he married in 1987. Pat enjoyed playing golf and bridge. He was a well known letter carrier in Schenectady. He was a frequent daily Mass attendee for much of his life. He was grateful to his many friends in AA for their support. The family would like to thank Ellis Hospital, Crescent Manor in Bennington, VT, Glendale Nursing Home and Community Hospice during his final days for providing care to their father and grandfather. Relatives and friends are invited to attend the funeral which will begin Saturday morning at 9:15 at the Gleason Funeral Home, 730 Union Street and at 10 o'clock at St. Helen's Church where the Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated. Calling hours will be Friday from 4 to 7 p.m. at the funeral home. Burial with military honors will be in Most Holy Redeemer Cemetery, Niskayuna.
